About Wayanad

Wayanad, the green paradise is nestled among the mountains of the Western Ghats, forming the border world of the greener part of Kerala. Clean and pristine, enchanting and hypnotizing, this land is filled with history and culture. Located at a distance of 76 km. from wayanadthe sea shores of Kozhikode, this verdant hill station is full of plantations, forests and wildlife. Wayanad hills are contiguous to Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu and Bandhipur in Karnataka, thus forming a vast land mass for the wild life to move about in their most natural abode. Regarding geographical location, Wayanad district stands on the southern top of the Deccan plateau and its chief glory is the majestic Western Ghats with lofty ridges and rugged terrain interspersed with dense forest, tangled jungles and deep valleys. The place also enjoys a strategic location as the leading tourist centres of South India like Ooty, Mysore, Bangalore, Coorg and Kannur are situated around this region. Covering an area of 2132 km ², with a density of population at 369 people/km² within a population of 780,619 people (2001 census), Wayanad consists of 3 taluks - Mananthavady, Sulthan Bathery and Vythiri. The district headquarters is located at Kalpetta municipality with a population of 29,602 as per 2001 census.

LAKES

1.Pookode lake

Pookode Lake, nestled in the lap of mountains, is one of the perfect destinations that any nature-tourist longs to visit. It is vast with an area of 8.5 hectares and with a maximum depth of 6.5 metres. Located at three kilometres from Vythiri, Pookot Lake and the verdant greenery of the rolling hills overlooking the lake, offer a view that is so riveting that it reminds you of a beautiful picture postcard.

2.Heart lake

PEAKS

1.Chembra peak

Positioned at an altitude of 2100 m, Wayanad is a scintillating hill station with rolling grasslands, blue skies, dense forest, mystifying hills, rugged trails, gushing waterfalls, and exotic wildlife. It is one of the top hill stations in South India, and among the must-include places in Kerala tour packages. Lies in the backdrop of the majestic mountains of the Western Ghats, one can witness the unusual contrast of thrill and tranquility here.

2.Pakshipathalam peak

Pakshipathalam is an eco-tourist spot situated in the Brahmagiri Hills of the Wayanad district. Situated at an altitude of 1740 m, Pakshipathalam is one of the best places for trekking in Kerala as well as Wayanad. Pakshipathalam is an ornithologist’s paradise as it is the abode of a large population of several species of birds. The deep rock caves, formed among the thick blocks of rocks at the northern top end of the Brahmagiri, are home to various birds and wild beasts. Pakshipathalam is a challenging tourist spot for any adventure-seeking tourist.

WATERFALLS

1.Soochpara waterfalls

Soochipara Falls also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls is a three-tiered waterfall in Vellarimala, Wayanad, India. It is surrounded by deciduous, evergreen and montane forests. Locally referred to as Soochipara ("Soochi" meaning "Needle" and "Para" meaning "Rock"), the 15-20 minute drive from Meppadi to Sentinel Rock Waterfalls has views of a number of Wayanad's tea.

2.Meenmutty waterfalls

Meenmutty Waterfalls is near Banasura Sagar Dam. It’s 23 km away from Wayanad, and it’s one of the top attractions in the region. Road access is available up to the entrance of Banasuramala Meenmutty Waterfalls. From there, you need to walk a few hundred meters up to reach the waterfalls.

DAMS

1.Karappuzha dam

Karapuzha Dam is one of the most stunning dams in the destination. The dam is known for its picturesque setting and skilful architecture. The dam sees a lot of tourism all year round because of the charming design and looks of the place.

2.Banasura dam

The Banasura Sagar Dam is located 21 km from Kalpetta, in Wayanad District of Kerala in the Western Ghats. It is the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia and a starting point for hikes into the surrounding mountains. It is an important tourist attraction.
